Read for a good cause! Help the library raise funds for the TLC animal shelter by participating in the Winter Reading Program! Pick up your reading sheet at the library starting January 5th. Read for 8 hours and receive a certificate! For more information, contact a Youth Services Staff member.

Word Play gets comical

Like graphic novels or comic books? Look forward to the Sunday comics in the paper? Ever wanted to make your own cartoon?

Word Play: Young Writers’ Group will be creating comic strips and learning about cartooning at the next two meetings, December 3 and 17, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Word Play is open to kids in third grade and up. Registration starts November 19!

Guys Read!

Need a rest from math? Sick of science? Take a study break with us, as we talk about Avi’s Seer of Shadows at the November meeting of Guys Read! The book, a chilling ghost story, is about 14-year-old Horace. He leaves his family in 1872 to apprentice for a photographer, and the boy is excited to learn about the new science. But when a ghostly image appears in his photos, Horace has to solve a mystery, before there is more blood shed.

We’ll discuss the story, do a project or two and have a snack. Guys Read! is open to boys in grades 4-8, and the next meeting is Nov. 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Call or stop by today to register!

And the winners are…

Thanks to all of you who participated in our Elect to Read campaign! We had more than 150 votes for our candidates, and I’m happy to announce our winners:

For the preschool through first grade group, Curious George won. You can find books about Margaret and H.A. Rey’s curious little monkey in our picture book section, under E REY.

The winner of the second through fifth grade category was Junie B. Jones. Read all about Junie B.’s adventures in the series by Barbara Park in the juvenile fiction section under J PAR and JP PAR.

Finally, the big winners in the sixth through eighth grade category were the Baudelaire Orphans. Check out the Baudelaires in Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events books, under J SNI.

Elect to Read!

Drop in the library from Oct. 28 through Nov. 4 to cast your ballot in our Elect to Read campaign! We’re celebrating the presidential election this year by running a slate of our favorite book characters. Any kids from preschool through eighth grade can fill out a ballot. After the election, we’ll post the winners in each reading group.

Meet the candidates

For preschool through first-grade readers, the candidates are:

There will be no weekly programs from October 20-November 1

All of your weekly favorites, like Time Travelers, Happy Books-Happy Cooks and Itsy Bitsy Toddler will return the week of November 3.

Guys Read!

Action, adventure and maybe even some duct tape await readers in the new boys’ book club at NLPL. Guys Read!, a boys-only book discussion group will meet for the first time Oct. 27 at 6:30.

We’ll be taking about the awesome adventures of Alex Rider in Anthony Horowitz’s Stormbreaker, playing some super-spy games and testing our nerve with a secret project.

Registration has already started, and the club is open to guys in grades 4 -8, so call and sign up today!

Word Play starts next week!

Have you ever wanted to be a writer? Do you spend a lot of time daydreaming about fantastic places or creepy characters?

We’re starting up a new program next week at New Lenox Public Library, for kids in 3rd grade and up, called Word Play. We’ll meet from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on October 8 & 22 (Wednesdays) to practice creative writing skills, tell some tall tales and hang out with other kids who have a hankerin’ for stories.
