What would the literary world be like without Harry Potter, if Charlie never won his magical golden ticket to the chocolate factory, or if Wilbur was never dubbed “Some Pig” by his good friend, Charlotte?
These stories, as well as hundreds of other children’s books, have been considered inappropriate by many people. They have been challenged and banned, in some cases removed from schools altogether, in a form of censorship.
This week is Banned Books Week, a time set aside by the American Library Association to remind Americans to celebrate their freedom to read any book they’d like to read. New Lenox Library Youth Services Department has set up a display of many of the books that have been challenged or banned during the past few years, along with a list of other favorites that have come under fire and a quiz to test your Banned Books Week I.Q.
Stop in to pick up your favorite “banned” book, or just to see what books make the challenged list.
